Pastor’s Pen
During days of spiritual darkness, it is easy to get sucked into the pessimism of the day. These are the kind of days that if you buy into either a religious or political spirit your heart can yield to a deep pessimism of spirit. Jesus had a word for us living in such a day!
Matthew 9:35-38 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
There is a better way, instead of being paralyzed by all that is going on around us, we can say, “it’s our turn now to do something great for God.” The times are ripe for believers to be who it is they can be in Christ. With God’s help, we can make an impact on the world around us.
During opportune times, rather than stepping up to the challenge, some people just continue to chatter about everything that is wrong. Like the 10 spies in Numbers 13:32, they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They were not only fearing the future, they were underestimating God.
When God gives us an opportunity He expects us to do something with it. I would like to suggest that opportunities to step up and take our turn and do something with God and for God abound. Will you take your turn? Galatians 6:9-10 says, So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
