Pastor’s Pen

We completed part one of John 17. Jesus certainly changes how we view eternal life. He says in John 17:3, Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. It is even more clear in the Amplified Classic Version: And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent. So eternal life isn’t just getting to heaven and living forever, although that is part of it, eternal life is knowing the Father and the Son.

The word “knowledge” in the Greek isn’t a shallow word, it is a word of depth, a word that implies intimacy.  The best part of my day is 5:10 pm when Marlyce walks through the door! It is the best time because I am in love with her, being conscious of her through the day, and can’t wait to resume where our relationship left off….usually with a kiss. Eternal life is knowing God in that kind of way. We are conscious of Him through the day and when we pick up the Word or pray, we can hardly wait to pick up where we left off. Because we have an intimate relationship. That is what Jesus is describing as “eternal life.” W. Tozer said, “He who would know God must give God time”. I would like to suggest that each of us will have a greater sense of eternal life as we determine that nothing is going to get in the way of knowing Him.

I hope you will study John 17 this week as a means of knowing the heart of the Father and His relationship with Jesus better.

See you this weekend.
